9 2013 Sept 20 Bomber Command Official 4 Engine Start Up*^
Read Moregetting ready for the night start up...it has been 54 years since this Lancaster had 4 engines running. This Lancaster was flown to the Uk in 1945. Canadian-built Lancaster FM159 was to late for the war. It was flown back, put in storage, flown buy the RCAF during the fifties, and in 1959 flown to an old airfield 28 kilometres east of Nanton. Its engines and propellers were removed as the aircraft was prepared to be scrapped. Three residents of Nanton bought the bomber, towed it home, and placed it on display next to Highway #2. It was badly vandalized before being mounted for display where it sat for the next 30 years. In 1986, a society was formed from the town's population of only 1600 and it audaciously annouced that, not only would it build a museum to honor Canada's huge contribution to Bomber Command, but that the aircraft would be restored to taxiable status with all four engines runn-able.
This dream came true tonight!
